Interested in gay travel but don’t know where to go? If you’re looking for “gaycities” to travel to, that have great gay social events, superb gay beaches, a size-able gay population, excellent gay nightlife, and are located in gay friendly countries, then look at my list!
So what are the top “gaycities?” I wanted to compile a list of the premiere “gaycities” not only in the US but in the world and I wanted to use a specific method for selecting these top “gaycities.” Click on the “See my methods!” to understand where I got the list from.[learn_more caption="See my methods!"] So how did I make the decision?
- I looked at 20 – 25 gay travel articles and read some of the best travel “gaycities.” Each time a city name came up, with what I thought was a good reason to put on my list, I gave 1 point on a spreadsheet.
- I looked at websites like gaycities.com and looked at their polls adding 1 point every time a city was mentioned. They took of some of the best gay cities to travel under categories like
- Best Overrall Gay City
- Best Pride City
- Best Food City
- Best Resort Town
- Best Nightlife
- Best Dressed City
- I took my own traveling into account and gave 1 point to gaycities that I’ve traveled to. I also took in second-hand accounts from friends who have traveled to some of these cities.
- Finally I looked at Google using keywords that gay people would look up. Using the Keyword Planner and a calculator to add 1 point to cities that:
- Used the Keyword Planner and typed in “gay porn” (changed the language depending on the city) and then narrowed down the search to only one city. In Keyword Planner you can take a searched phrase and narrow it down to a specific city throughout the world. I then got a general idea of how many gay people are in this specific city (its not exact but general)
- I crossed the phrase “gay club” with all the cities on the list (65 cities) to see which cities had people wanting to go to gay clubs. I had a few surprises with this one!
- I then just used the phrase “gay” and then all the cities on the list (i.e. “gay” Tel Aviv) to see who is looking up about gay things to these cities.
- Most importantly, you don’t have to agree with me but I guarantee you that these are some excellent gay cities!

Chicago is such a liberal city and so it should really be no surprise it is one of the best gaycities to travel. Chicago also had high polls for one of the best gay beaches, best eating, high on Google searches like “gay clubs”, and has a large pride parade.

12) Toronto, Canada
Toronto has scored high because of the amount of gay travelers who love this city and constantly being premiered as a top gay travel destination. Toronto has some of the best gay bars in Canada, is in a gay friendly country, and has a huge turn out for its pride parade.
11) Tel Aviv, Israel
Tel Aviv is the only Middle Eastern city on this list which is amazing in itself. Tel Aviv has shown great strides in becoming one of the top gaycities because this city is so liberal and open-minded. Among gay travelers it scores so high because of the beautiful people, gay beaches, gay bars, gay nightlife, and a unique gay city being that it’s in the Middle East.
10) Miami, Florida
Miami made the top 10 because of its party atmosphere, its extreme nightlife, it’s premiere gay bars, and its beautiful people. Miami is constantly on travel musts because of it’s fun attitude. Personally I can say that Miami does bring the goods in terms of having a good time and will not let you down vacation wise. Miami also scored high in its gay beach lifestyle and the fact that there is a large percentage of gay people living in Miami.
9) Madrid, Spain
Madrid is one the top gaycities because the country of Spain is so liberal and open-minded. Madrid scores particularly high because of the acceptance of gays and scores particularly high on travel websites. Madrid has one of the best European pride parades that draws hundreds of thousands of gays, a legendary Spanish party nightlife, and is generally a great country to be gay in. I can personally attest to the fact that Madrid has a great gay nightlife.
8) Berlin, Germany
Berlin is one of those surprising gaycities but scores very high in many categories. First off Berlin is in Germany, a great country to be gay in! Berlin has one of the biggest pride parades, is a major cosmopolitan city, and is a favorite among gay travelers. On polls, Berlin was usually rated high because it’s gay bars, and gay lifestyle. Berlin also scored high in google searches, and in travel websites.
7) Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Amsterdam is one of the most liberal countries in the world and a country that has led the way for gay rights. Gay bars and nightlife started in the famous Red Light district and that’s where much of the gay nightlife still is. But on top of that Amsterdam has one of the most unusual pride parades (it’s on water), comes up high on Google searches, and is constantly ranked high on travel websites.
6) Paris, France
Paris is one of the premiere world cities and gaycities. What is there to hate about the gay life in Paris? First, Paris is a major cosmopolitan city and in a gay friendly country. It has been listed on multiple travel websites as a city that won’t disappoint and an excellent gay city.

Barcelona also scores high in terms of food, gay nightlife, Google searches and gay bars. Having traveled to Barcelona, I massively approve for gays to travel here.

San Francisco is in fact very gay. Many people have felt that San Francisco has lost its touch with being a top gay city but if you just look at the numbers, San Francisco is in fact very gay in terms of the percentage of gays living in the city. Although one of the older gaycities, San Francisco hasn’t lost its touched, scoring high with gay pollers, high with gay bars and general gay nightlife. It is still considered one of the best gay destinations and scores high with its pride parade, and for being a food city.
2) London, UK
London is constantly ranked high in just about every class I looked up and it was really no surprise that it scored 2nd among gaycities in the world. I have personally traveled to London, twice, and can attest to the fact that people are well dressed and there is something for everyone. London scored particular high for its pride parade, and among gay travelers who constantly felt like it belonged as one of the premiere gaycities. I agree!
1) New York, New York
And finally New York scored the highest of any of the gaycities because it has everything they have and a bit more.
