Last Minute Travel Ideas | 2013

So you need a break and some last-minute travel ideas? Well last-minute travel can be stressful so I’m going to give you my top 2013 destinations and what type of last-minute travel deals you should be looking out for.

First: It’s important to know that you will have to be flexible when searching for last-minute travel deals. Last minute travel deals exist because airlines and vacation companies are trying to fill up seats and hotels at the last-minute.

Second: Make sure you research the destinations and the deals themselves. Sometime deals are too good to be true. Hotels love to put up photoshopped photos their property. Read reviews on websites like yelp and traveladvisor.

Third: Make sure you subscribe to airline newsletters and vacation deal websites. I would follow American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, Expedia, Kayak, Priceline, and Hotwire for starters.

Weekend Getaways from the US and Canada (Consists of 2-4 days) | Best of Fall 2013

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Get to Punta Cana right before hurricane season or right after. I’ve personally been to Punta Cana and it has fantastic beaches. It’s a great place for a quick weekend getaway and most of the resorts are all-inclusive (meaning that meals and drinks are included in the price).

For Americans, it maybe be somewhat of a challenge to get to Cuba but it may be worth it. Cuba is no longer a country to fear and always had some of the best beaches in the Caribbean. In fact it use to be the spot that most Americans went to. Today you can go to Cuba if you go through a Travel Company that holds a license to go. Great choice if you’re looking to step back in time.

I put Chicago on the Fall 2013 list because Fall is the perfect time to visit Chicago. This year it has been a relatively mild summer and the autumn is usually a great weather time to come to Chicago (before the winter).

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is a great last minute travel destination for a 2-3 day getaway. I’ve seen package deals for two people with hotel and airfare included that were very well priced. Autumn is a great time to go to Vegas because of the cooler weather.

Chiles Spring is approaching and is the perfect time to go. Fly into Santiago and explore the capital city. Or fly all the way to the tip of South America and experience high winds and meet penguins. Or you could be more extreme and see Valle de la Luna or Valley of the Moon.

China is a great last minute travel destination. Once you’re in China the prices for food and hotels are relatively good. Pick one city and then venture out from there. China is huge and it would be a mistake to try to see the whole country in a week or two.

Vietnam is such a great travel destination because of how cheap it is to actually be there and the culture you experience. The flight may be the most expensive part of your trip! Definitely hit up Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Ha Long Bay and Hanoi.

Nepal is almost halfway around the world from the US but a perfect last minute travel idea. Culture is all around in Nepal and Autumn is the perfect time to go see the Himalayas as the Monsoon season is quieting down. I took a trip on a scary flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and the journey is definitely not for the faint of heart.

Maldives is the most secluded on this list and probably the most expensive. If you have some cash to spend and want to getaway to pure seclusion, Maldives is the perfect last minute travel idea.

With direct flights from the US, Switzerland is perfect in the Autumn when temperatures are starting to fall and they are gearing up for the winter months. Prices to get to Switzerland drastically drop and your money goes much further than it would in the summer time.

Poland is a great Autumn destination as the temperature is cool and crisp with trees changing color. Poland is a small enough country where you could easily see much of the country in a week or two!

Looking for Last Minute Travel Deals?

When looking for last minute travel deals make sure you are actually prepared to purchase.

When I wanted to go to the Caribbean for 4 days, back in February, I was at first hesitant to make a purchase. I told myself that it’s too much money to spend at one time and I wouldn’t get the time off I needed.

But I kept searching and searching and I knew in general that I wanted to go in the Caribbean to a country that was safe.

The Bahamas came up multiple times on deal websites but much of the time there were deals for Nassau, Bahamas. I like Nassau but I’ve been there multiple times and I wanted to go somewhere more secluded. I eventually found Freeport, Bahamas for a fantastic deal.

Freeports is the lesser known city in the Bahamas but still have some of the best beaches in the Caribbean. Sometimes, if you want to save money, you should sacrifice location and try lesser known cities. Usually you will pay for a popular destination.

Expedia, Kayak, Priceline, Hotwire are great websites to start you search. Be flexible with your search days because many deals are for off season or for the middle of the week.
